176,000 FLASH TRADERS 100,000+ KAZANG MERCHANTS.

NOW SHOPRITE WANTS A PIECE OF THE SAME COUNTER.

The fight is moving from who supplies the shop to who processes the money moving through it.
If you still think this market is about selling airtime vouchers, you are looking at yesterday’s business model.

Pepkor’s Flash ended the six months to March 2026 with 176,000 active traders and R34.7 billion in throughput across its Informal Market Platform.

Lesaka’s Kazang network supports more than 100,000 micro-merchants and processes millions of transactions daily. More than 60,000 merchants are enabled for card acceptance.

Now Shoprite has taken 51% of R&A Cellular.

That places some of South Africa’s biggest retail and fintech groups in a contest for the same independent merchant.

Flash has scale in prepaid and informal trade.

Kazang combines prepaid vending with card acceptance.

R&A sells prepaid services and payments into spaza shops.

Capitec is expanding entrepreneur banking and merchant services.

Nedbank’s acquisition of iKhokha adds a specialised SME payments and cash-advance business to a major bank.

The battle is therefore broader than terminals.

A merchant who once needed separate relationships for banking, card acceptance, airtime, electricity and working capital can increasingly obtain several services from one provider.

Every extra service makes switching harder.

That is where the competitive threat sits.

The winning platform does not need to own the merchant’s shelves.

It needs enough relevance behind the counter to become difficult to replace.

Wholesalers and buying groups should ask themselves a hard question:

What is your merchant proposition beyond cartons and case prices?

If the answer is only cheaper stock, you may be competing against businesses that can see and service far more of the trader’s daily operation.

Who owns the stronger relationship with the trader in your town:

The wholesaler supplying his stock or the platform processing his money?
