South Africa's AI money went to the wrong shelf.

Two chatbots, one aisle

In the last six months, South Africa's two biggest grocers switched on AI shopping assistants.

Checkers' Pixie, built in-house by ShopriteX, launched in April and reached every Sixty60 user by late July.

Pick n Pay followed in July with Penny, which builds a basket from a voice note, a photo of a handwritten list, or a dish you found online. The aisles were never mentioned.

What the floor looks like elsewhere:

Overseas, the same industry is spending on the floor.

Kroger switched on its 500th Tally robot in August, at a Smith's marketplace in Ohio. The machine has walked US aisles since 2024, reading shelves with cameras and vision, handing store teams a ranked list of gaps, pricing errors and misplaced items to fix.

Tesco began trialling Tally in a UK store in July, after Morrisons trialled it last year.

Kmart Australia counts its shelves every night with one RFID robot per store.

The uncomfortable split

Here, the first AI budgets went to the app, where ordering is smoother.

There, the money is going to the shelf, where sales are lost or saved hour by hour. Only one touches stock.

The robot makes the store honest.

It knows what is on the shelf, where the price is wrong, and which facings went quiet overnight.

Chatbots remove friction from the order. Robots remove ignorance from the floor.

Sixty60 grew 34.5% last year, and the convenience engine is real.
But those orders are still picked in the same stores, with the same blind spots.

The app is getting faster. The aisle has not moved.

The question for this industry is why we spent our first AI budget on the front door while the cash leaks out of the back room?
