BOXER HAS REACHED 600 STORES — AND EUGENE STOOP DESERVES TO BE REMEMBERED AS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THAT STORY.

On 27 August 2026, Boxer opened its 600th store at Etwatwa Crossing.

Today we see a business producing R46.7 billion in annual turnover, operating seven distribution centres and employing more than 37,000 people.

But businesses of this size are built over decades.

And one name that deserves recognition in Boxer's journey is Eugene Stoop.

Eugene understood the Boxer customer and the merchandise disciplines behind the format.

Before becoming Managing Director in 2008, he had spent years as Boxer's Merchandise Director.

That matters.

He knew the products.

He knew the suppliers.

He knew the price points.

He knew the customer that Boxer was built to serve.

When Pick n Pay reported on his appointment as MD in 2008, it specifically said Eugene was already having a "very positive effect" on Boxer.

Eugene is widely credited with establishing Boxer’s formal administrative structures, introducing internal bakeries, and championing graduate employment programs within the South African grocery sector.

Eugene joined Boxer in 1991, served for many years as Merchandise Director, and was appointed Managing Director of Boxer Superstores in 2008.

Eugene Stoop was appointed Chairman of the Boxer Group in 2020, a role he held for 2.5 years before finally retiring, bringing decades of experience and strategic insight to the company’s leadership.

That acknowledgement should not disappear as the business becomes larger and new generations of leadership take it forward.

Today's Boxer is delivering impressive numbers.

FY2026 turnover increased 12.3%.

Trading profit increased 17.3% to R2.6 billion.

Trading margin reached 5.7%.

ROIC reached 26%.

The business added 51 net new stores during the year despite internal selling-price deflation of 1.2%.

Marek Masojada and today's Boxer team deserve recognition for what they are achieving.

But retail history matters.

Hugh Bland, Eugene Stoop and other Boxer leaders helped build and strengthen the operating foundations on which today's management could expand.

I worked with Eugene and remember the retailer behind the numbers.

Reaching 600 stores is therefore also an opportunity to recognise people whose contribution came years before today's headlines.

How many successful retail businesses properly acknowledge the operators who helped build the foundations everyone else eventually inherited?
