The Display Worked. Then You Ran Out Of The Product That Made It Work.
The Display Worked. Then You Ran Out Of The Product That Made It Work.
A Cross-Merchandising Idea Can Fail In One Afternoon When The Attachment Product Disappears
You build the display correctly.
Chicken portions sit beside braai spice and charcoal.
The customer understands the offer immediately.
By Saturday afternoon, the charcoal is gone.
The display is still standing. The commercial logic has disappeared.
Cross-merchandising creates an additional replenishment obligation because the attached product now has to be available where the customer expects to find it.
That means the stock file, back-room discipline and shelf checks matter as much as the original display idea.
A store manager should know:
Which attachment lines are repeatedly selling out?
At what time of day does availability break?
Is stock sitting in the back room while the secondary display is empty?
Has the display created demand that the normal order quantity cannot support?
Who checks the fixture during peak trading?
The RIDBS Cross Merchandising Playbook includes out-of-stock controls and corrective-action triggers. Its KPI framework flags an OOS rate above 5% for same-day action.
That is useful because a high-performing pairing can become a poor customer experience very quickly when one side of the mission is unavailable.
South African supermarkets do not need more displays that look good at 08:00 and collapse by lunchtime.
They need replenishment routines that protect the sale for the full trading day.
The free RIDBS Q4 2026 Cross Merchandising Playbook includes the audit sheets, controls and implementation tools to help put that discipline in place.
