THE SPAZA SHOP HAS ONE WEAPON SIXTY60 CANNOT DOWNLOAD: IT IS ALREADY NEXT DOOR.
A township customer needs cooking oil tonight.
The supermarket may offer a sharper litre price. The app may promise delivery. The spaza is sixty metres away, sells the quantity the customer can afford today and requires no delivery fee, minimum basket or waiting time.
That is why the digital grocery story looks very different from the pavement outside a township store.
Trade Intelligence estimates South Africa’s informal FMCG market reached about R220 billion in 2025.
The 2025 Township CX research found that 41% of frequent spaza shoppers spend R1,000–R2,000 a month on groceries.
These shoppers are highly connected, but connection does not automatically mean online purchasing.
World Wide Worx reports that 70.4% of LSM 3–6 adults have internet access, while only 23.9% shop online. Delivery charges, minimum-order thresholds, payment concerns and unreliable last-mile service outside major urban areas remain barriers.
So the township trader and Sixty60 can be solving different moments in the same household.
The supermarket app can win the planned basket.
The spaza can win the loaf of bread at 20:30, one cold drink, two eggs, airtime or the product needed before breakfast.
Township research continues to show consumers combining supermarket and spaza shopping rather than permanently choosing one channel.
That makes the contest far more interesting than formal retail versus informal retail.
One side has data, fulfilment technology and delivery.
The other is standing within walking distance of the customer.
In township retail, distance can still be measured in footsteps rather than kilometres.
