IF YOUR WASTE REPORT ALWAYS SAYS “EXPIRED”, YOU STILL DO NOT KNOW THE CAUSE.
IF YOUR WASTE REPORT ALWAYS SAYS “EXPIRED”, YOU STILL DO NOT KNOW THE CAUSE.
“Expired” describes the condition of the product.
Management needs to understand what led to it.
Was too much ordered?
Was older stock left behind newer stock?
Was a promotion changed without changing the order?
Was a markdown delayed?
Was production higher than demand?
Each cause requires a different correction.
Choose one department for a seven-day review.
For every waste entry, record:
• Product and quantity.
• Value lost.
• Reason for the loss.
• Evidence supporting that reason.
• Person responsible for the correction.
At the review, look for repeated causes.
Repeated over-ordering needs a buying correction.
Repeated rotation failures need a handling correction.
Repeated late markdowns need a timing and authority correction.
“Tell the staff to be careful” does not address those differences.
RIDBS Bundle 2 combines Waste Control, Receiving Control and Staff Accountability systems.
Use the waste system to structure the investigation. Check whether receiving contributed to the loss. Assign corrective actions through the accountability system.
Then compare the next period using the same measure.
You need evidence that the routine changed.
