STOP USING THE RECEIPT CHECK AS SECURITY AT THE THEATRE.
STOP USING THE RECEIPT CHECK AS SECURITY AT THE THEATRE.
A customer’s trolley is easy to inspect.
The transaction behind it may be far harder to see.
At many supermarket exits the ritual is familiar: receipt, trolley, quick glance, next customer.
It can support exit control. It should never convince management that the store now has a loss-prevention system.
The real transaction may contain a missed scan, product substitution, unauthorised discount, suspicious void, collusion or an item concealed before the customer ever reaches the officer.
A five-second receipt check cannot reconstruct everything that happened at the till.
THE FUTURE IS EXCEPTION-BASED.
Modern retail security is moving toward CCTV linked to transaction data and behavioural alerts.
South African retail-security reporting already describes systems that analyse shopper behaviour and flag suspicious activity for store personnel.
That changes the officer’s job. Instead of randomly giving every trolley the same attention, the store can direct trained people toward defined risks.
There is another issue: dignity and lawful procedure.
South Africa’s Constitution protects dignity, freedom and security of the person and privacy.
The Criminal Procedure Act gives private persons arrest powers in specified circumstances; it does not turn every security officer into a police official.
Stores therefore need clear procedures for searches, detention, escalation and handing suspects to SAPS.
A badly handled accusation can create a customer-service problem, an evidence problem and a legal problem in the same ten minutes.
Retailers should measure security by incidents prevented, evidence preserved, exceptions resolved and losses reduced—not by how aggressively customers are stopped at the exit.
The strongest security operation may eventually look less confrontational because it knows far more before the customer reaches the door.
