The tills rang all month but The bank balance stayed flat.
The tills rang all month. The
bank balance stayed flat.
A franchised supermarket in KwaZulu-Natal runs a strong weekend on cooking oil and maize meal.
Footfall lifts and the Monday meeting celebrates the sales line.
Two weeks later the supplier statement lands and the overdraft feels heavier. Gaps open on the grocery shelf while slow lines sit full at the back. The team asks how a good month on the tills left so little in the bank.
We see this pattern across independent and franchise stores.
Sales get tracked to the rand while margin by category gets far less attention.
Shrinkage by shift and stock accuracy at the receiving bay get even less.
A good top line then covers a poor operating result until cash runs short.
The Store Performance Scorecards page corrects that order.
It places Owner and General Manager measures on one view: revenue growth, gross profit contribution, shrinkage as a share of sales, labour cost as a share of sales, and availability.
Sales stay visible, with margin, loss, labour and availability on the same view.
Put margin by category next to sales.
Open the KPI Dictionary section first. Hover any dotted label for a plain definition.
Each line shows the formula, the owner, the direction and the target.
Edit the target and the actual directly on the page and the colours update for the session.
Green means on target. Amber means below target yet acceptable. Red means urgent. Grey means no data.
For this leak, score gross profit contribution at Owner level and gross margin at Grocery level for the last four weeks.
Add shrinkage as a share of sales and PO match rate from Finance.
When sales climb while margin slides, look at price mismatches, till overrides above authority, promo units sold below cost and markdowns captured twice.
Turn each red line into a named action
Move to the Scorecard section. Categories carry weights and the rating stays hidden below 75% data coverage. That rule stops guesswork. A verified critical gap in safety, food, pharmacy or licence compliance forces the result to red.
Then open the Action and Escalation Register.
Record the root cause, the corrective action, the owner, the due date and the evidence.
Open and overdue actions stay visible.
Ask one question in the weekly meeting.
Who owns shrinkage for fresh foods this week and what is the due date for the fix?
