YOUR SECURITY GUARD IS WATCHING
THE DOOR. WHO IS WATCHING YOUR R1 MILLION?
A visible uniform can deter theft. It cannot repair a supermarket with weak controls.
A supermarket owner can spend thousands every month on guarding and still lose stock through receiving, till manipulation, uncontrolled staff exits, waste, refunds and paperwork that nobody reconciles.
That is where the security conversation normally goes wrong. Management asks whether the guard was at the door. The better question is whether the store has designed the guard into its control system.
SAPS recorded 9,178 shoplifting cases nationally from January to March 2026.
That number covers reported cases; it does not measure every item that disappears before anyone notices. Retail security therefore has to work alongside stock control, CCTV, exception reporting and management supervision.
THE GUARD NEEDS A CONTROL MAP.
Which lines are repeatedly stolen?
Which emergency exits are vulnerable?
When does receiving become congested?
Which tills generate unusual voids?
Who checks staff parcels? Who protects the cash-office route?
A guard who receives no daily risk briefing is being asked to protect a business without being told where the business is leaking.
PSiRA’s Code of Conduct recognises functions including patrols, monitoring, crowd control, guarding property and identifying transgressors.
Those duties become valuable only when the retailer connects them to actual store risks.
The next generation of supermarket security will combine people, transaction data and video.
The officer should increasingly respond to exceptions instead of staring at the same doorway for twelve hours.
Your uniform may be visible. Your controls must be visible too.
